Local Maryland student introduces President Obama (from NBC local evening news in Washington, DC):
Anchor: President Obama announced his plan today to change the current college loan system. He was introduced at the White House by a student at the University of Maryland. Her name is Stephanie Stevenson. Craig Melvin went back to the campus with Miss Stevenson and is at the White House now with more on this story. Craig?
Reporter: Jim, good evening. Even before today, Stephanie Stevenson's parents had plenty to be proud of. The highly motivated American studies major is the first in her family to go to college. Today those parents absolutely beamed as their daughter took the podium behind me here at the White House.
Stephanie Stevenson: Hello everyone. My name is Stephanie Stevenson. I'm currently a junior at the University of Maryland College Park.
Reporter: With her mother by her side and her father in the crowd, the Baltimore native introduced the president.
Stephanie Stevenson: ... and I'm honored to introduce to you the President of the United States.
Reporter: ... who in turn introduced what he promises will be the biggest push to get more middle class students in college since the GI bill.
President Obama: At at a time when our children are competing with kids in China and India, the best job qualification you can have is a college degree or advanced training.
Reporter: President Obama wants to make more Pell grants available to needy students like Stevenson, whose mother and father are both on disability.
Stephanie Stevenson: Without the scholarship, I would be not be here or I would be extremely in debt.
Reporter: Stevenson has a full scholarship but since tuition has grown ten times faster than the average family's income, many students simply can't afford college. President Obama says providing $200 billion in funding for the need-based scholarships over the next 10 years will mean more first-generation college students like Stevenson get a degree.
Stephanie Stevenson: Scholarships have always, always been just a great part of my life, and I've always appreciated it.
Reporter: The 20-year-old says that while being at the White House with her family for a policy announcement is one of those moments she'll never forget . It was the moment after the announcement that's most memorable. That's when the president took her aside.
Stephanie Stevenson: We left, and he said you have a surprise, and he opened the door and his wife was there. and I was calm the whole time and I cried then.
Reporter: You cried?
Stephanie Stevenson: I did cry and she held me. That was wonderful.
Reporter: Now Stephanie told me tonight that she has already started visiting potential graduate schools. She wants to go on and get a Ph.d in Urban Planning and Public Policy and how would you spend the night after spending date at the white house? Stephanie spent Friday night studying, of course. We are live at the White House tonight, Craig Melvin, News4. Jim, back to you.
Anchor: That's a hard core student. Good for her.
